Stay Cool: An Air Conditioner Shopping Guide

by Sr. Editor on June 19, 2008

You knew Phoenix would get hot before you moved. Now that summer is here, you’re probably realizing that your expectations and reality were worlds apart. Chances are you find yourself looking for ways to stay cool on those long, sunny days. An apartment air conditioner can help, but not every place has a central unit included.

So, what can you do? Fortunately, there are some great options for Phoenix renters who happen to have apartments without built-in air conditioners. You can overcome the heat and even do so without breaking your lease if you consider:

Portable AC units – These freestanding units are ideal for cooling a single room or a small studio apartment. They will set you back a few hundred dollars, but you can enjoy the easy ability to move them where they are needed the most. Generally, portable units also include some sort of roller system, so it’s easier to carry around. Just move the unit to the room that will be occupied at the time and save yourself the expense of cooling down the whole apartment.

Window units – If the idea of toting a portable air conditioning unit around isn’t to your liking, window units can make sense. These generally cost a few hundred dollars as well and provide a means to cool specific rooms. Depending on the power behind a window air conditioning unit, it’s even possible to use one to cool an entire segment of an apartment. However, whenever you are powering an AC unit, whether central or window, in your Phoenix apartment, count on your electric bill going up.

Window fans – A window fan can help make a room more comfortable for human occupants. While these more affordable designs won’t cool down a place quite like a central air system or even window AC units, they can make a difference in the comfort level. Plus, they tend to be more affordable to operate. Just remember to turn fans off when people aren’t in a room. As the old mantra goes, fans cool people, not rooms.

Dehumidifiers/humidifies – If you think the air is too moist or too dry, you can help make a room more comfortable by considering the purchase of one of these. Dehumidifiers will take the moisture out of the air, which is generally not a big concern during a Phoenix summer. Humidifiers put it back in. In many cases, these machines not only make a room more comfortable, but they can also help people with sinus and nasal problems enjoy a more pleasant indoor experience.

Beating the Phoenix heat without a central air conditioning system isn’t necessarily fun. There are ways you can make your apartment more comfortable though. Even those on a budget will find options that can work for them.
