Choosing the Perfect Plants for Your Apartment

Houseplants can provide the perfect touch of green to make Phoenix apartments look and feel homier. If you want to exercise your green thumb in this environment, there are some things you need to know. Even indoors, the climate for plants can prove a little testy. There are, however, quite a few tips that can help you select the perfect plants for your apartment home.

The trick to enjoying success with indoor houseplants is knowing what type of plants to select for the conditions. There are several factors you’ll want to take into account when buying plants. They include:

The available lighting

How much or how little light your plants will get can make a very big difference in the chances of growing success. Certain plants thrive in low light conditions, but others demand lots of sun.

Bright: If the spot you want to decorate with houseplants has a ton of light, cacti and succulents are ideal. Flowering plants like chrysanthemums and impatiens will also work here, as well.

Dark: Should you have lower light conditions available, consider such plants as the dracaena, peace lily, philodendron and English ivy.

Conditions and Considerations

The humidity – The moisture level in your apartment can also impact a plant’s chances for survival. Some plants, like cacti, prefer rather arid conditions. This type of houseplant can be perfect in outer rooms, such as in front of a living room window. For more moist conditions, such as in the bathroom, consider ferns, spider plants and African violets.

Little people and Animals – If you have children or pets, you’re going to want steer clear of poisonous houseplants. Unfortunately, many favorites for indoor houseplants happen to be poisonous. Some of the plants to watch out for include aloe, chrysanthemums, English ivy, poinsettias, azaleas and philodendrons. Non-poisonous houseplants include African violets, snake plants, spider plants and gardenias.

Allergies – If you or someone in your home has allergies, choose your houseplants with care. Plants that people with allergies tend to do well with include crotons, parsley, passionflowers, peace lilies, Swedish ivy and begonias.

Productivity – Some people adore regular, flowing plants, but you might want your houseplants to serve double duty. If you want to enjoy fresh vegetables or herbs, you can grow many varieties from window sills. Cherry tomatoes, most herbs, radishes, small-sized peppers and even carrots with small roots can all do well indoors.

Phoenix apartments are ideal for growing a number of indoor houseplants. Just check your conditions and select plants with care. If you give them a little tender, loving care, your houseplants should thrive.
