How to Remove Old Odors from Your New Rental

by Sr. Editor on February 15, 2008

There is nothing worse than moving into a new Phoenix apartment home and finding out that previous tenants left a few things behind in the form of odors and foul scents. Sure, the cleaning crews probably came in and made everything nice and tidy, but the truth is removing odors isn’t always that easy.

If the sprays and Pine-Sol scents are wearing off and smoking, cooking and pet smells are coming on strong, relax. There are things you can do. Removing odors even years after the fact can be done.

3 Easy Steps to Remove Nasty Apartment Odors

Washing the walls:

This can help if the walls haven’t been painted prior to your arrival. Use a clean smelling cleanser and a bucket of warm water. Sponge down the walls to remove cooking and smoking odors. If the walls have been painted, this is still worth a go.

Cleaning the carpets:

Even if this has already been done, there are special formulations you can use for removing odors. If you’re unsure, hire a professional. Otherwise, consider using a basic pet odor remover carpet cleaning cleanser in a rented machine and put a touch of fabric softener in the rinse water.

Cleaning the air:

If the atmosphere smells stale, air out the apartment on a breezy day. Open doors and windows. Also, if odors are particularly strong, consider putting bits of charcoal in areas where they overwhelm. Charcoal can be placed in small dishes and hidden well in other areas. Just make sure it not the kind of charcoal that has lighter fluid already on it!

It doesn’t matter how well a cleaning crew does its job in between tenants, sometimes removing odors is still required. If smoke and pet smells are a problem, these are things you can do to make your apartment home smell fresh and clean.
